Yesterday, (Friday 10 March 2023) marked the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Lt Col (ret’d) Sir Richard Sharples KCMG, OBE, MC, Governor of Bermuda and his Aide- de-Camp, Captain Hugh Sayers.

Her Excellency the Governor, Ms Rena Lalgie and her Aide-de-Camp, Captain Alexander Gibbs, attended a memorial service at The Royal Military Chapel (The Guards’ Chapel) in London hosted by the Welsh Guards.

T20 Cricket Team Arrival

Last evening, Bermuda’s Senior Men’s National Cricket Team returned to the island.

And the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Sen. Owen K. Darrell, was on hand at the L.F. Wade International Airport to greet the team and personally thank them for their championship performance in Argentina last week.

The public will be aware that the Senior Men’s National Cricket Team performed outstandingly well during the recently held 2023 ICC Americas T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Qualifiers held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Produce From Inmate Gardening Programme Being Used To Supplement Kitchens Within Department of Corrections

“This is a fantastic initiative and yet another example of some of the positive developments coming from our correctional institutions,” said Minister of National Security Michael Weeks, JP, MP. 

 

It follows the news that eight Westgate Correctional Facility inmates are thriving in a voluntary programme to certify them in sustainable farming.

Reminder: Sammy Wilson Community Centre Closed

As a public reminder, and as a follow up to an advisory which was issued late February, due to water and subsequent electrical damage experienced at the Sammy Wilson Community Center (SWCC) on Angle Street, the facility is closed until at least early April.

The Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation (DYS&R) notes that the Ministry of Public Works are making the necessary repairs to the space.

As such, all programmes normally held at the Sammy Wilson Community Center are suspended until the facility reopens, which again is anticipated to be around early April.

Premier & Minister of Finance travels to the United Arab Emirates for Investopia 2023

Premier David Burt travelled to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates to attend the Investopia 2023 at the invitation of H.E. Abdullah Bin Touq Al Marri, the Minister of Economy for the United Arab Emirates (UAE). 

At the conference, the Premier met with the UAE Minister of Economy, the Chair of Abu Dhabi Global Markets, H.E. Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, the Minister of State for Foreign Trade, H.E Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi and had an audience with H.E. Khaldoon Al Mubarak Managing Director and CEO of Mubadala.

Residents Reminded to Not Include Faeces in Household Garbage

“I implore members of the public to cease and desist,” said Minister of Public Works, Lt. Col. the Hon. David A. Burch, OBE (Mil), ED, JP, MP, as the Ministry reminds the public that including faeces in household trash is prohibited.

Under no circumstances should any animal or human faeces ever be included in household trash put out for collection by the Waste Management Section.

Including faeces in household waste presents a significant health risk to both Waste Collectors and the public at large should a waste bag become torn or damaged.
