Yesterday, (Friday 10 March 2023) marked the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Lt Col (ret’d) Sir Richard Sharples KCMG, OBE, MC, Governor of Bermuda and his Aide- de-Camp, Captain Hugh Sayers.

Her Excellency the Governor, Ms Rena Lalgie and her Aide-de-Camp, Captain Alexander Gibbs, attended a memorial service at The Royal Military Chapel (The Guards’ Chapel) in London hosted by the Welsh Guards.

On Thursday 22 June 2023 Her Excellency the Governor will host a reception celebrating His Majesty the King’s 75th Birthday at Government House between 6 and 8 pm.

This morning it is a privilege to stand before this Honourable House as Minister of Social Development and Seniors with responsibility for Gender Affairs to share my experience attending the United Nations Sixty-Seventh Session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

Mr. Speaker, articulated in both its 2017 and 2020 General Election manifestos – this Government vowed to ensure more affordable housing is available for seniors and families; increase the stock of affordable housing throughout the country and expand rent geared to income programmes.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to update this House and the listening public of changes made to take Education Reform forward in Bermuda.

Last evening, Bermuda’s Senior Men’s National Cricket Team returned to the island.

And the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Sen. Owen K. Darrell, was on hand at the L.F. Wade International Airport to greet the team and personally thank them for their championship performance in Argentina last week.

The public will be aware that the Senior Men’s National Cricket Team performed outstandingly well during the recently held 2023 ICC Americas T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Qualifiers held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

With the theme this year being “Embrace Equity”, the Government of Bermuda is pleased to advise that female members of the public service will observe International Women’s Day (IWD) 2023.

A Cabinet Office spokeswoman said, “Each year on March 8, women around the world stand strong, stand proud and stand united in recognition of a day that seeks to raise awareness about the importance of gender parity and equality.”

The Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Sen. Owen K. Darrell, is encouraging as many residents as possible to be on hand at the L.F. Wade International Airport tomorrow evening, Wednesday March 8, 2023,   to welcome back Bermuda’s Senior Men’s National Cricket Team. 

 The public will be aware that the Senior Men’s National Cricket Team performed outstandingly well during the recently held 2023 ICC Americas T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Qualifiers held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“This is a fantastic initiative and yet another example of some of the positive developments coming from our correctional institutions,” said Minister of National Security Michael Weeks, JP, MP. 

It follows the news that eight Westgate Correctional Facility inmates are thriving in a voluntary programme to certify them in sustainable farming.

As a public reminder, and as a follow up to an advisory which was issued late February, due to water and subsequent electrical damage experienced at the Sammy Wilson Community Center (SWCC) on Angle Street, the facility is closed until at least early April.

The Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation (DYS&R) notes that the Ministry of Public Works are making the necessary repairs to the space.

As such, all programmes normally held at the Sammy Wilson Community Center are suspended until the facility reopens, which again is anticipated to be around early April.

Premier David Burt travelled to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates to attend the Investopia 2023 at the invitation of H.E. Abdullah Bin Touq Al Marri, the Minister of Economy for the United Arab Emirates (UAE). 

At the conference, the Premier met with the UAE Minister of Economy, the Chair of Abu Dhabi Global Markets, H.E. Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, the Minister of State for Foreign Trade, H.E Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi and had an audience with H.E. Khaldoon Al Mubarak Managing Director and CEO of Mubadala.

Thank you Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House to say simply our homeless people deserve shelter and this Government – with the able assistance of the Salvation Army – is doing its part in providing quality transitional housing and support programmes for the most vulnerable in our society.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to update this House and the listening public on essential but difficult decisions that have been taken to advance the Government’s commitment to reforming Bermuda’s public education system.

“I implore members of the public to cease and desist,” said Minister of Public Works, Lt. Col. the Hon. David A. Burch, OBE (Mil), ED, JP, MP, as the Ministry reminds the public that including faeces in household trash is prohibited.

Under no circumstances should any animal or human faeces ever be included in household trash put out for collection by the Waste Management Section.

Including faeces in household waste presents a significant health risk to both Waste Collectors and the public at large should a waste bag become torn or damaged.

The Ministry of Health advises that the COVID-19 vaccine certificate will no longer be available on the gov.bm portal after March 31 2023, as the ResQwest Pandemic Administration System is going offline. All vaccine information in ResQwest will be migrated to the Department of Health’s immunisation database, the electronic immunisation registry (EIR).
