“Sports play a critical role in our community and the Ministry will continue to do our part to support Bermuda’s National Sports Governing Bodies as they continue to help our athletes here at home and abroad. I look forward to setting out the extent of the Government’s support during the Senate Budget debate, which starts today,” said the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport and Government Senate Leader, Owen Darrell, JP.

Recently, the Minister of Economy and Labour, the Hon. Jason Hayward, JP. MP. attended a Technology Apprentice Presentation highlighting Mr Rian Michelsen’s User Experience Design (UX Design) coursework and Connectect Coding’s App Dev students’ applications in development. 

Earlier today (March 14), Premier David Burt recognised the Department of Employee and Organizational Development’s (DEOD) Janeek Providence as the recipient of the February (2023) Public Service Excellence Award.

As the community is aware, the Government of Bermuda’s PSEA recognizes Public Officers who are demonstrating admirable service delivery. Each month an individual or team is selected for their significant accomplishments in the last 60 days.

Reflecting on the recently held, ‘Gombey Unity Link Up’ event, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Sen. Owen K. Darrell, JP, said, “I want to take this opportunity to join the community in expressing my support for the recently held ‘Gombey Unity Link Up’, which was an amazing event. And I want to publicly extend my appreciation to all our Gombey Troupes for coming together in a spirit of camaraderie and unity.

“I condemn this act of violence by inmates at the Westgate Correctional Facility against a Corrections staff member and stand in solidarity with them.

“I can confirm that an incident took place on Friday morning. The Department of Corrections takes incidents like this extremely seriously and understands the importance of safety and security in the workplace.

“The matter in question was reported to the Bermuda Police Service, which is now investigating, and as such, it would not be appropriate for me to comment any further at this time.

There have been stories circulating in the community on this topic, and I believe it to be helpful to improve our understanding of the process and its impact.

Yesterday, (Friday 10 March 2023) marked the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Lt Col (ret’d) Sir Richard Sharples KCMG, OBE, MC, Governor of Bermuda and his Aide- de-Camp, Captain Hugh Sayers.

Her Excellency the Governor, Ms Rena Lalgie and her Aide-de-Camp, Captain Alexander Gibbs, attended a memorial service at The Royal Military Chapel (The Guards’ Chapel) in London hosted by the Welsh Guards.

On Thursday 22 June 2023 Her Excellency the Governor will host a reception celebrating His Majesty the King’s 75th Birthday at Government House between 6 and 8 pm.

This morning it is a privilege to stand before this Honourable House as Minister of Social Development and Seniors with responsibility for Gender Affairs to share my experience attending the United Nations Sixty-Seventh Session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

Mr. Speaker, articulated in both its 2017 and 2020 General Election manifestos – this Government vowed to ensure more affordable housing is available for seniors and families; increase the stock of affordable housing throughout the country and expand rent geared to income programmes.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to update this House and the listening public of changes made to take Education Reform forward in Bermuda.

Last evening, Bermuda’s Senior Men’s National Cricket Team returned to the island.

And the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Sen. Owen K. Darrell, was on hand at the L.F. Wade International Airport to greet the team and personally thank them for their championship performance in Argentina last week.

The public will be aware that the Senior Men’s National Cricket Team performed outstandingly well during the recently held 2023 ICC Americas T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Qualifiers held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
