Programming Note – Conversations with Former Premiers

In an effort to capture some of the important aspects of Bermuda’s history, the Government advised that over the next few months, CITV will be airing a series of interviews with former Premiers of Bermuda.

Entitled Conversations with A Former Premier, the 45-minute show features three separate interviews with former Premiers Alex Scott, Sir John Swan, and Dr. Ewart Brown. 

The interviews are being carried on CITV as part of its fall progamming line-up (see programme schedule below).

To correct a recent statement made to the media by the Farmers Association, currently, the Board of Agriculture (the Board) has a maximum of twelve members, and 50 per cent of those are registered commercial farmers focusing on in-ground crop production, organic type farming, and dairy and microgreen production.

August 2022 Consumer Price Index

Consumers paid 4.7 per cent more in August 2022 than they did a year ago for the basket of goods and services included in the Consumer Price Index [CPI].

The Ministry of Economy and Labour released the August 2022 CPI from the Department of Statistics.

“In summary, during August 2022, consumers paid 4.7 per cent more than they did a year ago for the basket of goods and services included in the CPI. This level of inflation increased 0.2 percentage points from the July 2022 annual inflation rate of 4.5 per cent.

Formation of a Review Group – Statement by the Premier and Minister of Finance, the Hon. David Burt

“I am pleased to announce the formation of a Review Group to assess the work of the Financial Policy Council (FPC) and make recommendations for possible improvements. This is the first review of the FPC since its establishment in 2015,” said the Premier and Minister of Finance, the Hon. David Burt. 

“The FPC has provided focused and helpful advice to previous Ministers of Finance and me. As with any ongoing advisory committee, it is timely to assess the overall effectiveness of its work, lessons learned and advise how it could be strengthened.”

October’s Public Service Excellence Award Recipient

Last Friday, Premier David Burt and the Head of the Public Service, Dr. Derrick Binns recognized Mr. Jahkari Woods from the Department of Health as October’s recipient of the Public Service Excellence Award (PSEA).

Mr. Woods is a Community Health Worker and has been recognized for demonstrating exemplary professionalism and efficiency in his role.

Minister Weeks Tours Hamilton Docks

“When Bermuda experiences a hurricane, getting the cargo docks up and running quickly is vital, not just for everyday goods, but also for hurricane supplies and repair materials to arrive here as quickly as possible,” said National Security Minister Michael Weeks following his recent tour of the Hamilton Docks.

Tabling of the Bill entitled: “Development and Planning Amendment Act 2022″

Mr. Speaker, today I am tabling the Bill entitled: the Development and Planning Amendment Act 2022 (“the Bill”). This Bill proposes to amend section 14 of the Development and Planning Act 1974 (“the Act”) to allow an Order made under section 14(2)(f) of the Act (i.e., a use classes order) to be subject to the negative resolution procedure. The Bill will also revoke the Development and Planning (Use Classes) Order 1975 (“the 1975 Order”).

Community Violence Workshop

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to give the House an update on the Community Violence Workshop that was held at the end of September.

Mr. Speaker, you will recall that in May of this year I made a statement to this Honourable House on addressing violence in Bermuda. Not more than 48 hours after my appointment in April, I found myself performing the grim task of offering condolences to two families who were dealing with the grief of losing their young sons to gun violence.

Reminder: Scheduled Water Service Disruptions for Pembroke Residents

The Ministry of Public Works is reminding Pembroke residents and businesses about the work now underway on the Parson’s Road trunk Government water main.

The work, expected to last four months, is part of the Ministry’s island-wide upgrades to the Island’s water and sewage infrastructure. The water main in question was determined to be past its useful life and determined to be the source of a significant daily loss of water. 

The Ministry has already informed area resident complexes and business owners directly and through a previous press release on 28 October.

Starting November 14th, the Pfizer-BioNTech original Adult formulation, and Moderna Bivalent coronavirus vaccines are available at the Hamilton Health Clinic, #3 Reid Street, every Tuesday from 9 am –  2 pm.

These vaccinations are for those persons who are uninsured or insured with HIP or FutureCare, and by appointment only, with no walk-ins. Call 278-6470 for assistance in scheduling an appointment.
