Hurricane Earl Update – Minister of National Security’s Remarks

Earlier today, the Emergency Measures Organisation met to get the latest update on Hurricane Earl. I am pleased to note that all our EMO partner agencies are ready and prepared should the need arise.

As of the noon update from the Bermuda Weather Service, Hurricane Earl continues to be a threat to Bermuda. Currently Bermuda is under a Tropical Storm Warning. Based on the latest forecast from the BWS, Hurricane Earl will be a category 3 storm as it passes southeast of Bermuda late Thursday night into Friday morning.

Coronavirus Update 7 September 2022

Since the last update, the Ministry of Health received 4574 test results, and 106 were positive for the coronavirus, giving a test positivity rate of 2%.

These results are from testing done on:

1.       Tuesday: 13 positive out of 957 results (1.4% positivity)

2.       Wednesday:  24 positive out of  892 results (2.7% positivity)

3.       Thursday: 9 positive out of 574 results (1.6% positivity)

4.       Friday: 15 positive out of 561 results (2.7% positivity)

5.       Saturday: 12 positive out of 288 results (4.2% positivity)

The Ministry of Education Provides Update on $150 Government Relief Initiative

The Minister of Education, the Hon. Diallo Rabain, JP, MP, stated, “We would like to remind parents that the application for the $150 relief is now live. This is a one-time payment for each student enrolled in a government preschool, primary, middle or senior school.”

“Parents are advised that the application for this relief will be open for two months, from September 2nd until October 31st, so that all of our parents can access this financial support for families.”

The Ministry of Education thanks Fortitude Re for their Donation to CedarBridge Academy

“On behalf of the Government of Bermuda, I would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Fortitude Re for their generous donation to CedarBridge Academy,” said the Minister of Education, the Hon. Diallo Rabain, JP, MP.

Fortitude Re donated $20,000 to CedarBridge Academy to fund a 6-week tutorial programme for over 150 students to receive support based on their needs and course requirements.

Upon completion of the programme, 60% of students had improved their grades in one or more subjects, with 7 students winning awards for improving their grades by 15% or more.

I previously announced that I had reserved the Cannabis Licensing Bill 2022 for the signification of Her Majesty’s pleasure under Section 35 (2) of The Bermuda Constitution.

I have now received an instruction, issued to me on Her Majesty’s behalf, not to Assent to the Bill as drafted.

The Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs concluded that the Bill, as currently drafted, is not consistent with obligations held by the UK and Bermuda under the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs and the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances.

Parks Department Carries out Tree Trimming Operation

Recently, the Department of Parks carried out tree trimming and maintenance on Berry Hill Road in Paget as part of the Government’s hurricane preparedness efforts, which include cutting back overhanging vegetation and shrubbery around the Island. 

High winds from storms have the potential to knock over trees and create additional difficulties during clean-up efforts following a storm’s passage.

Student School Transportation 2022

Good morning members of the media,

As we learn to Live with Covid, the Department of Public Transportation (DPT) will transition back to the 2019 level of student transportation services. This means that students using public buses will see changes as they go to and from school.

Over the last two years, under an established COVID protocol, the DPT provided minibuses to transport students directly to and from school. Students were collected and dropped off at the nearest bus stop to their homes or destination.

The Ministry of Education sponsored students to attend DREAM SPARK – STEM Summer Camp

“Watching our students engage in sports education and STEM projects with such joy was heartwarming to see,” said the Minister of Education, the Hon. Diallo Rabain, JP, MP.

“This is the third year the Ministry of Education has sponsored 20 public school students to attend the DREAM SPARK Summer Camp.”

Between August 1-5, 2022, 42 students between the ages of 5 and 16 participated in:

Public Reminder – Marine Turtles are Protected Species

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) wishes to remind the public that marine turtles are among many species afforded protection under the Protected Species Act 2003. Under the act, it is an offence to “disturb or harass” any protected species. Any person found to have done so commits an offence and may be liable on summary conviction to a fine of $25,000 or two years imprisonment.

Art in Public Buildings

Recently, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Dr. Ernest Peets, recognized 16 Bermudian artists who are currently featuring their works in Government buildings as part of the “Public Art Project in Government Buildings”.

The public will recall that the initiative was announced in the 2018 Throne Speech. The Department of Culture facilitated the project and last week, several creative pieces were installed in the Dame Lois Brown Evans, the General Post Office, and Government Administration buildings, all located in Hamilton.
