Davis Cup team steps up preparations in Cyprus

Bermuda’s Davis Cup team have been busy preparing for the upcoming World Group II play-off against Georgia in Cyprus.
Three of the four players, Trey Mallory, Wayne Montgomery and Zachary McGuire, have been training in Larnaca since Monday. Daniel Phillips will be joining up with his team-mates on Thursday, a day before they face the Georgians in the best-of-five format at Herodotou Tennis Academy.
Ricky Mallory, the team captain, indicated that all has gone according to plan in terms of the team’s preparations since they arrived in Europe, with the Bermudian delegation pleased with the facility to be used for matches on Friday and Saturday.
“We have trained twice a day since we’ve been here,” Mallory said.
“We had a great welcome from the Cyprus and Georgia tennis federations. They are extremely friendly people and have treated us like royalty, so the hospitality has been great.
“Regarding the tennis facility itself, you can tell they have hosted huge events in the past as everything is co-ordinated and well put together.”
Before flying out for national duty, Phillips was in action for Tulane University against Louisiana State University on Tuesday.
While the Bermudian teamed up with Lance Nisbet to win the doubles, the hosts captured the other two encounters, having earlier taken all six singles matches in straight sets.
